Every year, AIMA honours distinguished and eminent personalities who have made outstanding contributions to the corporate world and the profession of management with the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award. Established as one of the country's most prestigious honours, the award was conferred on Dr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman and CEO, Hero MotoCorp, this year. On the occasion of AIMA’s 66th Foundation Day, Dr. Munjal delivered the keynote address after receiving the award.
Beginning his address, he spoke about watching the movie Kung Fu Panda with his grandchildren and quoted a memorable line from the film: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” He related this thought to the importance of adapting and evolving with future generations so that we continue to speak a language that resonates with everyone. He also observed that change and the future have always been associated with uncertainty. Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that humanity can overcome unprecedented challenges and emerge stronger. Therefore, he urged everyone to view challenges as opportunities, reminding the audience that history is full of examples of human resilience in the face of uncertainty.
The pandemic also disrupted the global ecosystem, resulting in significant changes to operations, planning, and long-held beliefs. Leaders in both the public and private sectors must adopt balanced strategies that ensure growth while maintaining stability. He noted that today’s world is changing not only at a faster pace but is also far more complex than ever before. Geopolitical developments, rapidly evolving consumer behaviour, and technological advancements have created enormous challenges for businesses. Navigating such uncertainty requires unconventional thinking and the willingness to take calculated risks.
In an era where uncertainty defines economic and social structures, organisations must embrace new-age strategies and move beyond traditional approaches. While uncertainty is often perceived as a threat that pushes people into survival mode, it also creates countless new opportunities. Leaders and organisations should therefore activate their strengths and focus on growth rather than fear. Uncertainty also gives rise to previously undiscovered needs, making emotional intelligence essential for building trust. Effective communication is equally critical, as the absence of communication can create confusion and anxiety.
Dr. Munjal also explained how he and his team developed the PPP Model during the pandemic—Perspective, People, and Persistence. He stressed that having the right perspective during times of uncertainty is often the turning point. The ability to step back, observe changing circumstances, and alter course when necessary is crucial in a fast-moving environment. Organisations and individuals who analyse change quickly are better equipped to adapt successfully.
He further emphasised that people are at the heart of every organisation. Empowering people enables them to make informed decisions and encourages them to contribute meaningfully. Equally important is persistence, which allows leaders and organisations to continue pursuing their vision despite adversity. A thoughtful combination of these three principles, he said, equips organisations to overcome future uncertainties.
Reflecting on India’s journey, Dr. Munjal said that the country has emerged as a global example in managing disruptions over the past few years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The collective strength of the Indian people has produced a remarkable success story marked by resilience and new achievements. India’s resourcefulness and persistence have enabled the nation not only to adapt but also to leapfrog into the future, establishing itself as a champion of change. With inclusive macro- and micro-level growth, along with a strengthened start-up ecosystem, India is well positioned to achieve significant economic progress in the years ahead.
Just as he began his address with a quote from a film, he concluded with another famous line from Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility.” He reminded the audience that it is our responsibility to support ourselves, our families, our communities, and especially those who need help during times of crisis. According to him, these are the values on which future generations will judge us.
